Started on Acoustic Guitar -- Keith Wyatt. A Guide for Beginners (2002) |
***** | Mar07. For those wanting to learn chords and scales, Keith Wyatt does an excellent job of walking the student through power chords, major, minor and dominant chords as well as major, minor and pentatonic scales. His explanations are clear and progress logically. Strangely though, he plays an electric guitar in the beginning, even though the title says "acoustic." In my experience, this video would not suit anyone below about 10 years old. At that age a beginner would probably not be ready to hold down two or three finger chords and would be unlikely to have the self motivation to follow it through. (I usually teach single notes first to develop finger strength). For teenagers and above whos hands are more developed, this video may be as good as it gets for DVD learning. Of cource, if you have opportunity, the best way is to learn with a teacher who can give feedback and assess progress. You might even be able to use this together with a teacher who can assign specific exercises as practice. Actually - that's a great idea! | Harmony

| Learning Acoustic Guitar: Charles Sedlak |
**** | Mar07. One thing I like about this presentation is that Charles advocates the classical guitar sitting position for playing acoustic guitar (I thought I was the only one!). He also spends time explaining the steps for proper positioning of a pick in the hand. I like this explanation so much that I plan to use it with my own students. This video is not as good or comprehensive as the Keith Wyatt: Getting Started on Acoustic Guitar, but it is worth watching and the student can pick up something that they may have missed in the Wyatt DVD. Since you can rent both from Netflix, what do you have to loose? | La Guitarra: Charles Sedlak |

Lofgren: Electric and Acoustic Rock Guitar |
***** | Mar07. I became a fan of Nils Lofgren with this DVD after finding this through a search on Netflix and ordered it out of curiosity. Nils is an amiable character and goes about explaining the way that he gets his sound in a matter of fact way. His style of playing uses a thumb pick and all the other fingers of his right hand. He also demonstrates his use of harmonics which has inspired me to work some of those ideas into my own playing. The DVD has sections featuring both acoustic and electric guitars and fits into catagories of Rock, Blues and Acoustic. It's a must see for any player of these styles and instruments. JC | Nils

Guitar of Lightning Hopkins |
*** | Mar07. I'm not a real fan of Lightning Hopkins, but I guess the instructor on this DVD does a decent job of emulating his style. If you enjoy playing this earthy Texas blues style and have a little experience with basic chords then this may be for you. Personally, I think this style should be fairly extemporaneous and the benefit in watching this video is to catch a couple of Hopkings licks that could be useful in a blues jam. JC | Best

Feb07. Both Netflix and Amazon reviewers give this DVD praise and for good reason. Keith has a very easy going and clear teaching style and shows how to play blues chords and riffs that you can use to enhance your playing. Content is very useable if you already have some playing abilities. There are some nice clips of Keith playing with the band. I rented it, but this is a good one to have in your collection. JC |

Feb 07. Be dazzled as Johnson explains and demonstrates important points of his playing style and admits that he is still learning. Not for beginners, but even if you are, watch it anyway. Johnson's playing is very lyrical and creative Watching this DVD can show you concepts behind his playing and the possibilities. The explanations of what he is doing are not enough, but if you really want to know and are a dedicated guitar student you can find out. Perhaps the first video (which I did not watch) showed more of the basics. Slow motion clips are there so that you can try to copy his playing. JC |
