**** | Apr 07. This and the following DVD are almost the same and some of the lessons and examples are identical. This one has an extra chapter in main section and less in the Bonus Section. For the most part, the DVDs do a decent job of introducing the basic concepts. There is some criticism in other reviews that there are no slowed down tracks to play along to. A beginner may have trouble keeping up. Also, if you are renting, the online material is unavailable because you don't have the password to access online material.

Presents Play It All on Bass Guitar DVD |
**** | Apr 07. This and the previous DVD are almost the same and some of the lessons and examples are identical. This one has a Peavey label on it and uses their guitars and amps. Bonus Sections of the DVD are the same but this one has additional material taken from other McCarvill DVDs. For the most part, the DVDs do a decent job of introducing the basic concepts. There is some criticism in other reviews that there are no slowed down tracks to play along to. A beginner may have trouble keeping up. Also, if you are renting, the online material is unavailable because you don't have the password to access online material. This DVD is cheaper on Amazon and is essentially the same as above.

Rock House: Learn Rock Bass - Intermediate Chris McCarvill |
**** | Apr 07. This follow up DVD covers slap and pop techniques, "ghost notes", hammer ons, slides , bends, major and minor scales, improvising, baring. These are all very good techniques and well presented. The disadvantage of this DVD is, again, that there are no slow tracks for practicing. Of course you can always copy the lesson riffs and practice along with a metronome. An incentive to buy rather than rent might be to get the booklet that has all of the examples in it. But you can get by without. The purchased product gives you password access to more web info. This is good DVD for the player who has the basics down and wants to progress.

Rock Bass With 6 Great Masters! |
***** | Apr 07. This is a nice sampler DVD of some famous bass players of various styles. Chuck Rainey explains the 12 bar using the same pattern for boogie and rock; Glenn Letsch shows playing two, three and four note diatonic apreggios; John Entwistle shows his right hand tapping techniques; Beaver Felton demonstrates slapping and popping; Allen Woody shows funk bass using fingers and a pick; Stu Hamm shows arpeggios, slapping and popping examples. It's interesting to note that each bass player uses different right hand technique. This DVD is great to checkout the background from the biographies in this DVD and styles of these bass players. There are slow tracks too, so it gets top marks for content and usefulness.

Fun To Know: Learn to Play Bass Guitar |
***** | May 07. Its refreshing to see a popular instrument like the electric bass being taught on DVD without over use of TAB notation. Allen Markel may not seem so exciting a bass player as some of the other longer haired guys (Allen has none!) , but he teaches a great foundation for anyone who really wants to learn this instrument and become a good player. There is music notation to print out and Allen does more in-depth teaching of the basics than the other started DVDs. This is the DVD I would give to my kids if bass was what they wanted to play.
