Fred Sokolow: Beginner's Blues Guitar June07 This DVD is focused on the beginner who likes the blues.  Someone with a little experience may get something out of it too by watching through it.  The beauty of this DVD is that Fred introduces one simple ideas at a time and plays tunes using what he has shown.  There is enough good content for the novice player to progress and be challenged.  What Fred does well is show how to put basic ideas together and make them groove along. Fred Sokolow's Music
Blues Story May07 Rooted in Mississipi's Delta region among oppressed black people, blues is at the core of todays popular music forms. According to one account in this DVD, blues is like the thing that stops the pain  when you have toothache. Hard times of slavery and later the apparently injust system of "crop sharing" created the environment in which blues was formed.  The Blues Story documents famous artists who witnessed these hard times.  This is an important documentary for musicians wanting to play and understanding the "soul" of the music. Ronnie Earl: Blues Guitar with Soul Apr07 Ronnie teaches like "the guy next door" and tells matter-of-fact how to play the blues. I've already watched and forgotten this DVD, but it left a favorable impression and if you are really into this style you will get something from this.  Riffs, turnarounds,  right and left hand technique. Well worth your time. Heart And Soul: The Best Of Ronnie Earl
Nils Lofgren: Electric and Acoustic Rock Guitar Mar07 Nils is an amiable character and he explains how he gets his sound in a matter of fact way.  Nils uses a thumb pick and all the other fingers of his right hand.  He also demonstrates his use of harmonics.  The DVD has sections featuring both acoustic and electric guitars and fits into catagories of Rock, Blues and Acoustic.  This is recommended viewing for player of these styles and instruments.  Nils Lofgren: Live Acoustic (2006)

Ultimate Collection Nils Lofgren
Guitar of Lightning Hopkins Mar07 I'm not a real fan of Lightning Hopkins, but I guess the instructor on this DVD does a decent job of emulating his style.  If you enjoy playing this earthy Texas blues style and have a little experience with basic chords then this may be for you.    Although, I still can't understand why anyone would want to learn these pieces note for note all the way through.  For me, this style should be fairly extemporaneous and the benefit in watching this video is to catch a couple of  Hopkings licks that could be useful in a blues jam. Guitar Method: In the Style of Stevie Ray Vaughan

Feb07.

I'll be totally honest, I fell asleep during this one.  I did learn that Stevie Ray used really thick strings and really thrashed on them to get the kind of sound that he did.  If you are a Stevie fan and want to watch how to play some of his licks you might get something out of this.  It's a bit monotonous though, going through them one clip after another.  There is a tab pdf to printout from the DVD.  This one is good to rent but I wouldn't be happy if I had bought it.  JC

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985 (2004)

The Ultimate Beginner Series: Blues Guitar with Keith Wyatt

Feb07.

Both Netflix and Amazon reviewers give this DVD praise and for good reason.  Keith has a very easy going and clear teaching style and shows how to play blues chords and riffs that you can use to enhance your playing.  Content is very useable if you already have some playing abilities.  There are some nice clips of Keith playing with the band.  I rented it, but this is a good one to have in your collection.  JC

Eric Johnson: Fine Art of Guitar

Feb 07.

Be dazzled as Johnson explains and demonstrates important points of his playing style and admits that he is still learning.  Not for beginners, but even if you are, watch it anyway.  Johnson's playing is very lyrical and creative. Watching this DVD can show you concepts behind his playing and the possibilities.  The explanations of what he is doing are not enough, but if you really want to know and are a dedicated guitar student you can find out.  Perhaps the first video (which I did not watch) showed more of the basics. Slow motion clips are there so that you can try to copy his playing at a more realistic pace.  JC

Famous Rock Guitar Riffs and Solos

Feb 07.

Very impressed! Like some of the other videos, this is not for beginners.  Tom Kolb does an excellent job of showing, step by step, famous solos of Chuck Berry, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Tony Iomi, Richie Blackmoor and Eddie Van Halen.  If you know your basic major chords, power chords and pentatonic scales you should be able to work through and learn the solos of these Rock & Blues giants.  JC
